Pattern

The inspiration for this piece was first born out of my fascination with the variety of patterns on the ground which can be viewed from satellite images available on web based mapping tools.  I was particularly fascinated by the nature in which cemetery layouts evolve and the variances between plots according to faith or whether laid during times of conflict.

I took to replicating the layouts in pencil drawings and the results were beautiful and organic.  I introduced the ants to draw on parallels in social structures and to examine the significance of the individual within the whole.

But try as I might to treat the theme with distance and without emotion, the subject matter is a loaded one and resists detachment.
